Sound Is a Medium for Quiet
“When the war came along, I decided to use only quiet sounds. There seemed to be no truth, no good, in anything big in society. But quiet sounds were like loneliness, or love, or friendship.”
-John Cage
Sound is a medium for the tensions we live in, but the big sounds and noisy overwhelm often grab our attention before we can inhale or sense the soft parts that make our lives rich. It’s in the quiet moments where we process this tension.
In the quiet we find curiosity
In the quiet we find the purpose of our longing
In the quiet we find rest in our days and clarity in our beings
In the quiet we find what’s worthy of our time, our resources, our attention.
Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
We find the quiet sounds have
More strength than reaction
More resonance than despair
More resilience than outrage
More stamina than a scream
Sound is a river that runs through lived experience, a universal medium we all relate with. We hold and give away a lot of power in this relatively ignored medium. There is a lot of power in the quiet. Power that prepares us to create in more meaningful and authentic ways. Power that gives access to divine influences, power that lives in those easements of loneliness, love, or friendship.
The quiet moments tell us the truth.

How do you practice making space for the more "quiet sounds"?
What might it look like to find space for friendship, emotion, nature, and quiet as you move through this week?
A Blessing:
May we find quiet
Find our truth within
Return to one another
And let the soft parts
Heal our world
